I believe artists have a cultural responsibility, to express what it means to be human in our time and experience. The arts are a history of emotional, intellectual, and political processes of their day. I consider my art a communication to humanity, a cry for connection, relatedness, a kinship of our emotions. Images were the first written language, and they can bridge the gap between language and cultural barriers to give us a common ground. Through art, sometimes recognizable and sometimes left to the viewer’s mind to define or not, my voice is heard. Often times I feel that I can express an emotion, desire, longing, with images that I can not express with any other means. Also the imagery I create is like all the arts, each person translates them differently for themselves. This is a beautiful and amazing thing, to have each person who sees this art have a unique experience as the imagery turns into their own personal language of symbols and meanings. The joy that I feel is my own, the grief also, but I can make images that others can relate to their own joy and grief, and that is greater than my own emotion alone.
